early precocity has ended in the creation of geniuses that could make up wholesome artistes. We have long been fascinated by musical prodigies gifted with a prodigious talent. It is always refreshing to listen to such exceptionally talented contemporaries who have struggled with family expectations and the machinations of the music business that burden budding soloists. Their inspiration and perspiration have been rewarding.

Chitra Veena maestro N.Ravikiran has been a star performer on his Chitra Veena or Gottu vadya. Good musical background, attractive stage presence and experience have made him a star-attraction.

Assam and Bangalore youth get together for a music project 'Aawaz - speak up against sexual violence!!' to generate awareness about the atrocities that women bear in every walk of life.

Aawaz - speak up against sexual violence
(In the photo - singer Antara Nandy)
India as a nation has placed women on a divine pedestal for ages, but the ground reality is as ghastly as it gets. Violence towards women is an ever increasing curve in the country and shows no signs of decline. Societal reform is the need of the hour and therefore a handful of youth based out of Bangalore got together for a music project to emphasize and generate awareness about the atrocities that women bear in every walk of life.

The single 'Aawaz - speak up against sexual violence!!' is composed by Jim Ankan Deka, an Assamese musician and director of Bangalore based music organisation Eastern Fare Music Foundation (http://www.easternfare.com). The lyrics are penned together by Jim and singer Ritwika Bhattacharya. Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Little Champs (2009) finalist Antara Nandy from Kolkata has rendered her vocals to this cause along with Ritwika and Queen Hazarika (a familiar face in the music scenario of Assam).

A still from the music video
(In the photo - Antara Baruah)
The song aims to sensitize people of various social evils like sexual violence, child abuse and marital rape. The core idea behind the song is to encourage people to speak up and not hush up matters like this.

The song is recorded at Eastern Fare Studio and Madcat Music Studio in Bangalore and Sargam Audiocraft, Guwahati. The music video is directed and produced by Parmita Borah. This collaborative project involves noted artists from across India and will be released on June 01, 2013.

Bangalore Comic Con 2014 (photo: Jim Ankan Deka)

How often would you see Robocop looking lost, Joker and Batman posing for photographers, and Maleficent taking selfies – and all that under one roof? In its second edition, Bangalore Comic Con truly was a collage of creative costumes, merchandises, and countless memories from our childhood.

We, the Music Malt team, walked in wearing those fancy comic con tags and badges provided only to media. That would be Jim and me… or Jim and I. Our third team member Mickey had a business meeting, and therefore promised to arrive later. Jim had passed on the driving instructions and asked to him to follow GPS directions. The venue White Orchid auditorium is at the other end of the city and is close to a popular landmark ‘Manyata Pech park’.

Any way, we walked in with fancy tags around our neck, and cameras hanging from our shoulders hoping to quickly walk through, take as many images and interviews as possible and get home. As we moved further and further into the venue, we realized that we had walked into madness – pure, amazing, exhilarating madness. People, young and old alike were walking around dressed in crazy comic costumes. Superheroes, super villains, anime, manga, Amar Chitra Katha, sci fi, movie characters and many more that neither Jim nor I could recognize. The only logical thing we could think of was to immediately purchase some masks and wigs to fit in. Honestly looking normal seemed a bit abnormal… well a bit off putting maybe.

Shijo Varghese and Parmita (photo: Jim Ankan Deka)
Up ahead we found stalls with caricature paintings and drawings. We saw our friend Shijo Varghese of Shijokes in his caricature shop. Took few snaps with him before moving on towards the other stalls around.

Bangalore Comic Con 2014 had a great assortment of stalls ranging from comic books, T shirts, collectibles, live caricature artists, custom coffee mugs glasses and other consumables. It took over two hours to complete viewing all the stalls. And the food stalls – I am not certain if I was high from the comic lovers’ energy or my hunger but rolls and cupcakes they served were heavenly.

Meanwhile, our team member Mickey hadn’t reached, although he messaged us informing that he was somewhere in that area.

We moved on to the main stage. The Cosplay (Costume competition) was about to begin. Jim and I found ourselves two secure seats, and began clicking pictures of the contestants. After the eight cosplayer got off the stage, my phone rang. It was Mickey. I knew if I picked it up, I’d have to help him find his way in. So I passed on the phone to Jim. Jim murmured something into the phone and handed it back to me. Mickey was still on the line. I didn’t want to talk. I wanted to see Wonder Woman whiplash the compere with her lasso of truth. But duty calls, I had to answer the call. On the other end, I could hear Mickey screaming. Apparently he had been making circles around area but still couldn't find the venue for Comic Con. Had he traveled with a female companion, he’d have completed the saat pheras with her.

A stall at Bangalore Comic Con (photo: Jim Ankan Deka)
“Where exactly are you?” I asked.

“Opposite Manyata Tech Park”, he screamed.

“Opposite? It’s adjacent to Manyata Tech Park, not opposite. Who told you it’s opposite?”

At that point, Mickey and I simultaneously realized who the culprit was. I hung up the phone and looked angrily towards Jim. He seemed oblivious, lost in the Amazonian princess’ beauty.

Well that was my comic con story. Let’s see what some of the other people had to say

Neel Saud, Mumbai based editor traveled all the way from his city just to attend Bangalore Comic Con 2014. He says – "Actually I scheduled my calendar so I could be in Bangalore during Comic Con. It was a first for me. You don’t usually see Darth Vader stand in line for a Coke, or Son snow... except when you are in Comic Con! The crowd, awesome merchandise stalls, pop art pieces and the Cosplayers, all come together to make it a heaven for Comic lovers. I heard the next edition would be in Mumbai. Game on..."

Bangalore Comic Con 2014 (photo: Jim Ankan Deka)
Bangalore based Business Analyst and a core member of the Bangalore Comic Con 2014, Anshul Chaurasia, says – "My favourite part has always been the Cosplay competition. The Bangalore crowd has always upped the level of Cosplay in the country every year and we saw that this year as well. It’s a very satisfying experience to be part of making such a grand event happen specially because there are so many fans and at the end of it you make more comic enthusiasts out of the casual visitors. Spreading the pop culture and comics’ awareness is the sole aim here. The response this year was beyond our expectations, even with a bigger venue compared to last year and this time it was a ticketed event, so many more people came to attend it was simply amazing. I remember seeing people waiting in line at 10am on Sunday morning even though the entry was only getting started at 11am."

Prady Das, Grand Prize winner in the Grand Finale of Bangalore Comic Con 2014 says – "Cosplaying as RoboCop in Bangalore Comic Con 2014 has been really an out-of-the-world experience for me. I felt like a complete celebrity during those 3 days. I believe more than 1500 people came and took pics with me during those 3 days.

Robocop at Bangalore Comic Con (photo: Jim Ankan)
Prady added, "I still can't forget the twinkle in their eyes, when they saw my RoboCop costume. It made me feel elated. I had burnt my fingers, cut and bruised myself during the costume preparation but after 2 months, it was all worth it in the end when I won the Grand Prize in the Grand Finale of Bangalore Comic Con 2014 i.e. an all-expenses paid trip to Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo and an XBOX ONE (not launched in India yet). I also got the best costume in Sci Fi category on Day 1 and best costume in Gaming Category on Day 3. I consider this as one of my biggest achievements. I can't wait for the trip and can't wait to lay my hands on the XBOX ONE. Comic Con is the best thing to happen in India and I heartily thank the founder of Comic Con-Jatin Verma from the bottom of my heart."

Ankita Kemkar, who partook in the Cosplay dressed as Venom, says – "From a cosplayer's point of view, it has been a totally different experience.Thrilling, since it had always been a dream to cosplay and it feels amazing to have socialised with new folks who shared the same amount of enthusiasm. Truly the 3 most awesome days of the year! Can't wait for next Bangalore Comic Con!"

Comic Con Bangalore 2014 witnessed workshops and live chats with creators, artists and writers of popular comics and graphic novels including Dan Parent, an American comic book artist and writer best known for his work for Archies Comics; Rob-Denbleykar, Co-Creater of Cyanide and Happiness; Peter Kruper, an American cartoonist and illustrator; David Lloyd, a British comics artist best known as the illustrator of the story V for Vendetta and Neil Gaiman, an English author of short fiction, novel and comic books.

Another highlight of the event was Star Wars Experiential Zone. It was the first of its kind experience zone created to enthrall the fan boys. The Star Wars zone was designed to resemble the bridge of a star destroyer with snazzy and futuristic display, equipped with Star Wars weapons, character figurines and inspired art. Also, Microsoft conducted its first audience experience of the XBOX ONE before its official launch.

Doodling with Green Day when September Ends | Priyanka's moodle

Doodle by Priyanka Gogoi
Music + Doodle = Moodle |Today’s Moodle is a song by the American band, Green Day.
While scourging for music and what would be appropriate for this time of the year (Autumn… there are quite a number of songs on autumn), it suddenly hit me that September is ending. And the first song that came to mind was ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’. Kind of appropriate, right?

Though I really like the official video of this song, yet I stayed clear from the video-theme (American war scenario after the September 11 attacks) while making this artwork. Instead, I attempted at creating a collage of memories between a father and a son and how much the latter misses his dad. The song was originally written in memory of lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong’s father.

I wondered why in one phrase of the song, the lyrics said “Seven years have gone so fast” and in another phrase, it said “Twenty years has gone so fast”. Turns out, Billie Joe Armstrong’s band, Sweet Children (which later became Green Day) was formed seven years after his father died, and Billie wrote the song twenty years after his father died.

When you listen to the song with the original purpose in mind, it becomes all the more meaningful.

Hope you like this piece. Much love!

One of the many things a day job holder holds precious is ‘earned leave’. You don’t have to fake illness, kill your relatives, or organize Satya Narayan Puja every four days – all you do is plan ahead and ‘claim’ the leave. I claimed mine, recently, and how!

On 26th September, Friday (that’s right a weekday), I along with my fellow bloggers from Music Malt reached the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Electronics City, sharp at 10. ‘Why’ you ask? To attend the Bangalore Literature Festival and have an audience with the who’s who of the literary world. The itinerary handed to us by the smiling ladies at media desk showed an interesting line up of one-on-one and panel discussions. We had a little time to kill before the inauguration, so we went to Crowne Plaza, and stuffed ourselves with club sandwiches and steaks.

Girish Karnad, Chandrashekhara Kambara and Shobhaa De
at Bangalore Literature Festival (photo - Jim Ankan Deka)
We made it back just in time for the inauguration. Vikram Sampath, co-founder of Bangalore Literature Festival welcomed an impressive lineup of guests, which included Girish Karnad, Chetan Bhagat, Shoba De, Chandrashekhara Kambara and Binalakshmi Nepram. They took turns to light the diya (the Indian way of starting something on an auspicious note) and deliver brief stimulating speeches.

I take another look at the itinerary. ‘Day 1 looks interesting’, I tell myself. Panel discussion, conversation, Venita Coelho, Arnab Ray blah blah blah, one-on-one with Chetan Bhagat, panel discussion, blah blah blah… Whoa! I stopped. For a second there, I thought I had left my specs at home, or maybe even my brains. The itinerary said something like ‘Queen of Hearts – Rani Mukerji in conversation with Bhawana Somaaya’. What’s a Bollywood actor doing at a literature festival?

I put that thought to rest as two posh looking ladies occupied the seats right before me – an assertive lady (mildly reminiscent of D. H. Lawrence’s description of cocksure women) and her not so assertive assistant. I heard the assertive lady command her assistant, “I want anything controversial, anything sensational, anything objectionable he says on twitter… and I want a tweet every two seconds… tag him, got it?”. The assistant seemed too overwhelmed to respond, and by the time she could, her boss (presumably) had already walked away.

Chetan Bhagat and Shinie Anthony (Photo - Jim Ankan Deka)
I wondered whom she was referring to, and looking up at the stage remembered that Shiney Anthony, co-founder of Bangalore Literature Festival was interviewing Mr. Chetan Bhagat. Ofcourse. When ‘The CB Family’ is in the vicinity, a twitter feud can’t be far away. I was not so sure if the ladies managed to get any scoop though.

Contrary to what one makes of his tweets, Mr Bhagat seemed grounded and sensible. Although Shiney Anthony grilled him with questions like ‘Are you a Bollywood groupie’, the popular writer responded with a lot of wit and humor, often suffixed with a nervous chuckle. The session bubbled with many LOL moments, especially when Mr. Bhagat made comments like ‘I am not the best author, but I am the bestselling author’, and ‘Someone needs to lower the standards, so that the others look good’ (on being asked multiple questions about Bollywood).

The next session that I attended had Pradyot Manikya Deb Barma, Dhruva Hazarika, and Binalaksmi Nepram as the panelists. This session held a special place in my heart, because the theme was ‘Does India neglect its eight sisters’ (meaning the North East India). During the discussion the trio shared some startling facts about the region. Being a north easterner it was both a moment of pride to see speakers from my land strike such a forceful conversation, while simultaneously being reminded of the step-motherly attitude towards the region. I was taken aback when Deb Barma mentioned that out of the 87 schools in Tripura, 43 are being used to host armed forces!

We were informed that Chetan Bhagat would be addressing the media, so had to rush to the media lounge. I asked him if his poster boy image affects how his work is perceived. He admitted that the popularity certainly helps to sell his work, but he believed that there’s more to him and therefore actively engages in generating public opinion though his articles. (Click here to watch the interview).

Shortly after that, Rani Mukerji addressed the media. I have to admit, my ‘Bollywood actor’ impression of her was very unfair. She articulated her responses to all the questions we asked her. I asked her if she’d consider becoming a writer. She replied that while people have always thought that she’d make it as a writer, she chose to believe otherwise. (Click here to watch the interview).

So the Bollywood bit of the festival was done and dusted. Our photographer Jim and I came out for a quick snack, and went back for the session on “Who’s language is it anyway?”. Oh! Before that did I mention that I met three eminent novelists from Assam – Jahnavi Barua, Mitra Phukan and Dhruba Hazarika? For a while I did not realize that I was sitting next to them. When I did, I was filled with a sense of awe, excitement and to be honest a little bit of uneasiness. Sitting next to authors whom I have admired for years! It felt like the ending lines of John Keats’ Ode to a nightingale - Was it a vision, or a waking dream? Do I wake or sleep?

After our introductions, I wanted to say something that made me sound wise, but I was worried that I’d go overboard. So after putting a lot of thought into it, I leaned towards Mitra Phukan and delivered my killer line ‘Are you enjoying yourself’. A voice inside my head said ‘Really? That’s your line?’. Much to my relief all the three writers were very pleasant and conversed with me with a lot of interest.

Once we completed our rounds of the bookstalls, we came back for a session on Sita-shadow and substance. I can’t claim to know any of the panelists, but their arguments on whether women should be like Sita or Draupadi was quite amusing. I couldn’t however, understand the relevance of the discussion. It’s the 21st century, the Sitas and the Draupadi’s should be put to rest. No?

Anyway, the sun had set, bringing an end to a delightful day. We decided to catch the Carnatic Classical music concert by Academy award nominated Bombay Jayashree before heading back. The program was delayed due to some backstage/technical adjustments.

We waited in the green lawns, letting mosquitoes take a few sips of our blood. After about 30 minutes, Bombay Jayashree took on the stage and enthralled the audience with her powerful vocals. It was worth the wait… and the mosquito bites, we tell ourselves before wrapping up the day.

The 3rd edition of the Bangalore Literature Festival is a success, and there’s no two ways about it. Be it the ensemble of authors, the plethora of topics covered, or the fact that you won’t find a single advertising kiosk or banner around – speaks volumes about the substance, humility, and sincerity of the event. Little wonder that within two years of it's inception, Bangalore Literature Festival has emerged as the second largest literary conclave of our country. Kudos to Vikram Sampath, Shiney Anthony and Srikrishna Ramamoorthy for gifting this to the people of Bangalore.

Jazzmandu 2014 - October 16-22, 2014

2014 marks the 12th edition of Jazzmandu or Surya Nepal Kathmandu Jazz Festival, a week-long international Jazz extravaganza in Nepal’s capital. This year, the “biggest jazz party in the Himalayas” brings together a a refreshingly diverse and powerful line-up that will make the Kathmandu valley vibrate with jazz from 16 to 22 October. 2014 Jazzmanu will feature renowned international musicians from various cultural and musical backgrounds from Sweden, USA, Australia, Cuba, France, Brazil, Singapore as well as Nepal.

Since its early days back in 2002, Surya Nepal Kathmandu Jazz Festival has featured renowned international musicians from diverse cultural and musical backgrounds as well as traditional and jazz musicians from Nepal. The festival offers an exciting platform for national and international artists to meet and share their love of music with fellow musicians and with an ever-growing audience. Jazzmandu offers quality jazz to audiences in Nepal, and transcends cultural boundaries while spreading the message of unity, compassion and peace through the language of music.

Over the years, Surya Nepal Jazzmandu has successfully introduced jazz that has now permeated the fabric of popular music in the Nepali capital, exposing musicians to new techniques, styles and the freedom of improvisation that have encouraged and expanded their own creativity. The festival has also been instrumental in generating a growing genuine interest for music education and western music traditions as the numerous music and jazz schools in the capital can attest. The Jazz for the Next Generation competition, a now well-established feature of Jazzmandu, opens the festival and provides an opportunity for aspiring local young bands to showcase their skills and talents and interact with renowned visiting artists. “Every year we see with this music competition that there are more and more young Nepali musicians getting into Jazz, and many are very talented and passionate! It is great to see that the festival has had an important role to play in this!” says Navin Chettri, Jazzmandu’s Artistic Director.

During the past twelve years, the festival has provided free shows for the general public, jazz performances for school students, and master classes and workshops by visiting artists for music enthusiasts and students. Jazzmandu has introduced locals to many virtuoso performers from across the globe – Trilok Gurtu, Tito Puente Jr., Grammy Award Winner Marlow Rosado, Jamie Baum, Claudia Quintet, Dario Eskenazi, Gary Varsace, Jesse Van Ruller, Steve Barrios, Xiomora Laugart, Natalie Williams, Catia Werneck, Ari Hoenig, and Mike Del Ferro, Louis Banks and Don Burrows to name a few.

The international language of music dismisses narrow socio-cultural divides and defies the barriers of culture, color, faith, geography to promote peace and compassion in a world in great need of understanding, empathy, compassion and tolerance. Surya Nepal Jazzmandu provides an exciting platform for musicians and people of all walks of life to come together through their love of music. In turn, international artists have welcomed the chance to discover and appreciate Nepal, its rich culture, its natural beauty and spirituality, the warmth of its people, and the chance to meet and share musical experiences with renowned local musicians.

The Surya Nepal Kathmandu Jazz Festival is a unique blend of culture, people and improvisational music, creating a magical and unforgettable musical experience in the heart of the Himalayas. Even though jazz began as an American art form, it has permeated cultures all over the world. Jazzmandu strives to gather musicians from a variety of countries and musical backgrounds, and provides an opportunity for them to present their unique and refreshing approaches to jazz to a diverse audience.

For its twelfth edition, starting on 16 October, the festival brings no less than nine bands from various countries. “This year the festival will be even more diverse than before as more countries are represented. We have musicians coming from Australia, Sweden, Cuba, France, Switzerland, Brazil, Singapore, Japan, the US and of course Nepal”, says Navin Chettri.

JAZZMANDU 2014 ARTISTS

Kristian Persson Elements (Sweden) - Kristian Persson Elements consists of five of Sweden’s most colorful musicians and together they form a sparkling electro-acoustic quintet. With elements of progressive jazz, indie, funk and soul, the raw groove creates the foundation for an emotional quest for musical alchemy.

KJ Denhert (USA) - KJ Denhert’s performances move you to laugh, to dance and even to cry. Her voice is powerful, lyrics full of intelligent insight, and her musicianship impeccable. KJ’s eclectic, yet unified performances reach out to many different types of audiences without compromising her music and beliefs. KJ’s special blend of urban folk & jazz has earned her four Independent Music Award nominations.

Ange Takats (Australia) - Ange Takats has a voice that is able to coat with sugar, crush with sadness and cut through to the soul of a song. The Australian songwriter’s worldly adventures and her natural gift for storytelling have allowed her to develop a unique performance style – weaving light-hearted travel tales between darkly emotive songs. Her latest album ‘Arva’ blends the sounds of 30s jazz with 60s folk.

Pity Cabrera Trio (Cuba/France) - Cuban pianist Pity Cabrera’s musical versatility and surprising mastery of various styles like Jazz, Classical and traditional Cuban music make him one of the most promising musicians of his generation. Established in 2010 in Paris, Pity Cabrera has become a favorite amongst Europeans.

Eduardo Mendonça (Brazil) - Brazilian vocalist, percussionist, guitarist, composer and arranger, Eduardo Mendonça performed in many venues in Bahia – Brazil and in trios elétricos—brightly lit mobile soundstages for festivals and public dancing in Brazil —and toured locally and internationally as vocalist and percussionist with the folkloric troupe, Exaltação á Bahia. In 1991, Mendonça was featured in Paul Simon’s documentary music video, “Born at the Right Time.”

Tropic Green (Singapore) - Some of Singapore’s resident jazz and Latin stars from Cuba, Japan, USA and of course Singapore come together as Tropic Green to give you harmonically rich and rhythmically sparkling original compositions all written by band leader Susan Harmer. Harmer’s compositions have real depth of harmony, reflecting the tonal colors of the various instruments in the band.

Dhrupad Caravan (Nepal) - Dhrupad is the most ancient style of Hindustani classical music where two singers sing together, Jugal Bandi style. It has survived until today in its original form. The Dhrupad tradition is a major tradition of Indian culture. The nature of Dhrupad music is spiritual, seeking not to entertain, but to induce feelings of peace and contemplation is the listener. Vishal Bhattarai and Inoue Sou have studied Dhrupad music under The Gundecha Brothers in India for 6 years.

Cadenza Collective (Nepal) - Founded in 1992, Cadenza started experimenting with jazz in 1998 while playing regular gigs around Kathmandu valley, breaking the mould in a city then dominated by rock bands playing popular covers. Cadenza Collective is an eclectic mix of Jazz, Afro-Nepali funk, and Nepali folk influences, Cadenza is also famous for spearheading musical collaboration between Nepali classical and international jazz musicians.

KJC and N.A. Jazz Orchestra (Nepal) - The KJC-ARMY Jazz Orchestra is a recent collaboration between the Nepal Army Band and the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory with the main purpose of promoting the big jazz orchestra sound, something unique in Nepal. Its directors and conductors, Rajat Rai, Amul Kharki and Mariano Abello, lead this 18-piece orchestra, which play blues, rock and Latin music arrangements.

We can be Heroes just for one day | Priyanka's moodle

Doodle by Priyanka Gogoi
Music + Doodle = Moodle |Today’s Moodle is a song by David Bowie.
This is a very literal doodle of the line “We can be Heroes just for one day”, taken from the song ‘”Heroes”’ by David Bowie.

The song is actually a romantic song (though it’s been used quite often in championships and such, for eg., it was played when Britain’s athletes entered the stadium during the 2012 Summer Olympics).

I don’t remember when I first heard this song. It has been around since 1977, long before I was born, and it has been covered by a lot of artists (though I have listened to none of the other versions). In fact, this song has been ranked as one of the greatest singles of all time by various magazines. And rightly so, I guess.

Many of them recognize it as The Tunnel Song from the movie The Perks of being a Wallflower!

The song is romantic, yet melancholic. It gives courage, yet wants us to be careful. It was inspired by an affair during the darker days of Berlin.

The doodle is inspired by just one line of the lyrics… the line that goes: “We can be Heroes just for one day”. The line can be a standalone inspirational quote! I drew a simpleton from South India in a typical hero’s costume (think Superman!) on top of one of those Bangalorean buses. He’s feeling heroic, he is courageous… and he, too, can do something heroic just for one day!

Everyone can be hero. Until next time!
